Capstone High School sponsored and hosted CapSci-fi an Inter School Science competition 2022-23 on 7th January, 2023. Apart from participants from Capstone High school the event was attended by ten schools across Karnataka – DPS Whitefield, Birla Open Minds, Vydehi School Of Excellence, Winmore Academy, NCFE JBN, The Polaris International School, Vivekananda Higher Primary School, Christ International School, NPS Mysore and NCFE CV Raman Nagar.
CapSci-Fi is an annual science event organized by Capstone High to encourage students to showcase their creativity, scientific disposition and problem solving skills through the Design Thinking Process. The objective of this event is to build a scientific temperament, develop critical thinking skills, turn on the wheels of creativity and to inspire students to become problem solvers. The participating students had to identify a problem in their environment and come up with an innovative idea to resolve it. The students designed prototypes and tested the same, to ensure the authenticity of their proposed solution.
The competition for different categories was judged by a panel of distinguished scientists, educationists, environmentalists and executives in related fields. The panel of judges included Mr. Jaspreet Singh, a Boeing Designated Expert (BDE); Dr. Abhinanda Sarkar, faculty in MIT and IISc, and has worked in the research divisions of companies like IBM and GE; Mr. Arun who is a passionate research scientist with over a decade of experience managing research projects in the field of cancer genomics and diagnostics; Dr. Sharmistha Chakrabortty, a passionate educator involved in teaching, curriculum development, assessment, mentoring and career counseling for over two decades; Mr. Nijin J N, Senior Developer at Curioscity Science Discovery Center, Bangalore; Mr. Kartikeyan a distinguished scientist who has worked in Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), a premier laboratory in the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) between 1970-2008 and Mr. Bharat A.J., an engineer who established “Young Innovators” to nurture the scientific temperament of children and provide them with opportunities to explore areas like aero-modeling, robotics and astronomy.
The competition was divided into two categories. Category 1 for students of Grade 3 -5 and Category 2 for Grade 6 – 9. The criteria for judgment were innovation and creativity, environment friendliness and social applicability, confidence and clarity of communication.
The first prize for Category 1, went to a team of students from Polaris International school for their project on biodegradable pots. The second prize for Category 1 was bagged by a team of students of Vydehi School of Excellence for their model of ‘Galley Garden Garner’ which reuses water after washing vegetables to grow plants. The third prize for Category 1 was awarded to a team of students from Polaris International School for their eco-friendly grain preservative tablets.
The first prize for Category 2, was awarded to a team of students from Winmore Academy on their project to design a model of ‘lake cleaner’ to keep our water bodies free of plastic pollution. The second prize for Category 2 went to a team of students from Capstone High school for their model on Ortho bag, which provides a solution to students to avoid carrying very heavy school bags. The third prize was awarded to a student of Capstone high school for designing a model of eco drain super scooper, which helps to clean our drains and avoids the problem of water logging.
Heartiest congratulations to all participating students from all schools , who put in their best efforts to design creative and innovative prototypes of models that provide simple solutions to problems in our environment and show a way to create a sustainable future.
